El Niño: Water Treatment Plant capacity enough for consumers

SHAH ALAM, 16 May: The Selangor Government assured that the water capacity at water treatment plants is sufficient to meet the needs of the consumers although the country will be facing the El Niño and the month of Ramadan.

This is because the existing water source is enough and the effort of pumping water from ponds and mines is expected to make the water last for up to six months.

The Executive Councillor for Youth and Sports, Infrastructure and Public Amenities, Dr Yunus Hairi, said that the water reading in Sungai Selangor rose up this morning, with a reading of 41.75 percent.

He said that results of sample analysis from 2011 till 2013, alongside the state Health Department (JKNS) and the Chemistry Department (JKM), also showed the quality of water in alternative ponds have been determined to comply with the standards set by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH).

15 out of 27 of the parameters were on heavy metals.

“Three of the sampling showed Mercury recorded at less than 0.001 milligrammes per litre (mg/l), Cadmium of less than 0.0002mg/l and Lead of less than 0.002mg/l.

“These contents comply with standards set by the Health Ministry, which set 0.001mg/l for Mercury, 0.003mg/l for Cadmium and 0.05mg/l for Lead.

“The sampling results for 2013 showed Mercury recorded at less than 0.001 milligrammes per litre (mg/l), Cadmium of less than 0.0002mg/l and Lead of less than 0.001mg/l.

“While the analysis results for 2012 showed that Mercury (Hg) and Lead (Pb) were not detected, while Cadminum (Cd) was at a rate of 0.0003mg/l,” he said during a press statement,

He said that based on water quality reports by Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (SPLASH), when water was pumped from the ponds into the river, Mercury levels were less than 0.0008mg/l, Cadmium was less than 0.002mg/l and Lead was less than 0.01mg/l.

He added that the Selangor Government hopes that the water reservoir can be increased up to 65 percent until the end of May and early June based on the current rate of rainfall.
