SMUE participants enjoy RM500 for Jom Shopping

SHAH ALAM, 12 Feb: The Senior Citizens Scheme (Skim Mesra Usia Emas – SMUE) came forward with a new approach to refine the state government in ensuring that senior citizens registered under it enjoy benefits of the programme while they are alive and after death.

In contrast with the existing approach, the new proposal allows SMUE participants to enjoy some of the contribution while they are still alive through the ‘Jom Shopping’ (Let’s Go Shopping) programme.

The Chief Operating Officer of Rantaian Mesra Sdn Bhd, Kamsani Nasir, said that the proposal is seen to be more balanced, in addition to opening space for senior citizens to enjoy the state’s revenue during their lifetime.

“The contribution remains the same; RM2,500. We will use RM500 for the Jom Shopping programme, which is RM100 throughout a period of five years.

“Meanwhile, the remaining RM2,000 will be distributed after death,” he said.

Under the current method, SMUE participants will receive the contribution (benevolent fund) through their beneficiaries after they die through phase 2, which is RM1,000 in phase 1 and the remainder RM1,500 in phase 2 (60 days after death).

Kamsani said that the proposal will be extended to the Exco for Health, Welfare, Women’s Affairs and Family, Dr Daroyah Alwi, before being presented at the State Executive Council (MMKN) meeting.

“SMUE will extend this proposal to the Exco, who will then present this to the MMKN.

“If approved, we expect it to be implemented by the middle of this year,” he said.

SMUE is one of seven agendas in Phase 1 of the Merakyatkan Ekonomi Selangor (MES) agenda that was first introduced by the Pakatan Rakyat government when they first administered Selangor in March 2008.
