SHAH ALAM, 20 Mar: The use of electric buses should be implemented in Petaling Jaya due to the dense population, in addition to reducing traffic congestion.

Bukit Gasing Assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran said that the implementation is to increase the number of buses in Petaling Jaya.

“Indeed the use of electric buses is necessary and feasible to be implemented in an area like Petaling Jaya. Mini buses are still relevant and what is important is the number of buses in a place like this should be increased,” he said when contacted by Selangor Kini.

The Damansara Utama Assemblyman, Yeo Bee Yin, however said that so far there is still no proposal for the implementation of electric buses.

In relation to this, he said to improve public transport facilities, residents require a shuttle bus, especially connecting to the Light Rail Transit (LRT) to commercial or residential areas.

“At the moment, there has not been any suggestions yet, but we definitely need more shuttles connecting LRTs to commercial and residential areas,” he said.

Previously, the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) was studying the possibility to use electric buses in the future.

The Sunway Route Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) will make history as the first fully electric bus service in the country, scheduled to start operations in June.

The collaboration between Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) and the Sunway Group under the Private Public Partnership (PPP) programme will make history with the Sunway Route-BRT being the first BRT project in Malaysia and the first elevated BRT in Southeast Asia.

The project is said to help reduce the traffic congestion problem which is getting more serious in Bandar Sunway and Subang Jaya.
