Kemaman flooded again, 125 victims relocated to 3 evacuation centres

SHAH ALAM, 9 Jan (Bernama): Kemaman district was hit by floods again with three relief centres opened to house 125 victims from 37 families Thursday night.

The latest development however did not increase the number of flood victims, which also involved Pahang, Kelantan and Perak, because the number declined from 21,491 people compared to 21,938 as of yesterday evening.

In TERENGGANU, a spokesman for the Terengganu National Security Council (MKN) said the 125 flood victims in Kemaman were housed at the Kampung Padang Kubu Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) premises, Sungai Mas Plantation Officers’ Barrack and Masjid Lama Padang Kubu.

It is learnt that low-lying areas in Kemaman were flooded again following heavy rain in the interior areas and also due to high tide.

In PAHANG, the number of evacuees dropped slightly to 14,494 at 61 relief centres in five districts from 14,612 recorded this evening.

A state police contingent headquarters’ flood operations room spokesman said Pekan district still had the highest number of evacuees at 9,783, followed by Maran (2,618), Kuantan (1,012), Temerloh (913) and Bera (168).

Raub district was hit by floods again with two main roads inundated, causing the stretch at KM1 Jalan Felda Kerau, near the UiTM project, to be closed to all vehicles, as the water level reached one metre for a distance of 300 metres.

The stretch at KM39 Bentong-Raub road, meanwhile, is only passable to heavy vehicles after the floodwater level reached 0.35 metre along a 500-metre stretch.

However, no flood evacuation has been reported in the district.

In KELANTAN, there are reportedly 2,749 flood evacuees at 27 relief centres compared to 3,203 at 32 centres in the evening.

A state MKN spokesman said Kuala Krai district had 1,399 evacuees, Gua Musang (1,157), Tanah Merah (93) and Machang (100).

In PERAK, there is no change in the number of evacuees, still at 4,123 (1,116 families) at 21 relief centres in five districts.

A Perak MKN spokesman said Perak Tengah had 3,158 evacuees, Hulu Perak (454), Hilir Perak (296), Manjung (160) and Kuala Kangsar (55).
