SHAH ALAM, 1 Oct: The Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) is actively clearing drains and the drainage system around the area to ensure that the problem of flash flooding will not recur.

He said that the drainage system will also be upgraded from time to time to ensure that residents do not face the problem again.

“Our move to address the issue of flash flooding is to clean up the municipal drainage area and improve the drainage system.

“During the flash flood the other day, the clean-up work was done until late at night and was still ongoing last night, and it has been fully completed,” he said.

Yesterday, heavy rain for over an hour caused some areas, including the Kajang town and Kampung Sungai Kantan to be hit by flash floods.

The heavy rain that began about 4 pm resulted in repeated flooding in the same area after a similar incident occurred 10 months ago.

In December last year, flash floods due to heavy rain affected the town with traders and the public suffering losses when property and vehicles were damaged by the flood.

Recalling the flash flood incident, Kamarul said that it was caused by heavy rain which started at 3 to 4.30 pm. The floods caused the road to be flooded, business premises affected and traffic congestion.

“We acted by sending a clearing-up team from the Municipal Department of Environment, the Landscape Department and a Quick Action Squad to help clean up the mud and debris.

“However, the flood receded between 5 to 5.30pm,” he added.
