Dry weather not the reason why water levels at Selangor dams have dropped

SHAH ALAM, 2 July: The dry weather and low rainfall frequency at the moment are not factors that are influencing the receding water levels at dams in Selangor.

The Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) website displayed that the catchment rate at each dam has been consistent since the dry weather hit in June.

However, there has been a decline at several dams, but the rate if only by one to two percent, compared to the catchment levels in May.

The level at the Batu dam recorded a catchment of 89.32 percent, with 28.55 million cubic metres and rainfall rate of 0.00mm.

For the Klang Gates, the dam level recorded at 76.81 percent or 19.46 million cubic metres with rainfall of 8.00mm. The Sungai Labu reservoir is at 67.58 percent or 5.86 cubic metres with rainfall of 1.50mm, while the Langat dam is at 66.65 percent or 22.72 million cubic metres with rainfall of 6.00mm.

In addition, the Semenyih dam is at 50.43 million cubic metres (85.37 percent) with rainfall of 0.00mm. The Sungai Tinggi dam is at 70.99 million cubic metres (62.00 percent) with rainfall of 0.00mm and the Tasik Subang dam is at 3.22 million cubic metres (76.59 percent) with rainfall of 0.00mm.

Meanwhile, for the Sungai Selangor dam, which supplies 60 percent of water to the residents in the Klang Valley and Putrajaya, is at 41.68 percent or 95.86 million cubic metres, with rainfall of 15.25mm.

LUAS will ensure that the water rationing in the state, including the Klang Valley and Putrajaya, does not repeat despite the El-Nino phenomenon (dry season), which was expected to hit at the end of June.

LUAS has an alternative plan to ensure that the water supply is always sufficient for the people of Selangor’s consumption.

In addition to dams, Selangor also depends on reservoirs which can supply water at a higher capacity and cloud seeding will continue despite the dry season by using the best methods.

Meanwhile, the weather report for the statement, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department website, expects rain on Wednesday (today) and Thursday (July 3) in most areas.

Meanwhile, the weather is good despite the lack of rain since 4 to 8 July.
