JAIS urged to clarify SOP to avoid misunderstanding

SHAH ALAM, 4 June: PKR suggests for the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) to establish a special unit to identify high risk groups to implement any action under their power and responsibility proactively and pre-emptively.

The PKR Information Chief, Dr Muhammad Nur Manuty, said that the measure should be taken to avoid any crisis, like the recent one that took place, from recurring in future.

At the same time, he said, JAIS should come forward to explain the standard operating procedure (SOP) easily and practically to all, the Muslim and non-Muslim community.

“To resolve matters such as this comprehensively and for the long-run, a communication mechanism that is effective based on the spirit of goodwill and respect among the people of all religious backgrounds should be spread.

“Immediate action that is open in nature, by holding consultations and dialogues on understanding, should be intensified.

“If anyone is seen as violating the rules and law, let the court decide,” he said in a statement today.

On June 1, JAIS arrested a bride who was going through her wedding with her partner at a temple in Petaling Jaya.

The arrest invited various reactions from the public, including political leaders and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) who disputed the move.

Commenting further, Muhammad asked all involved parties to be patient and take realistic and mature measures in addressing the issue.

“This is not the first time such conflict has happened. It has happened many times in the past, in different forms and situations.

“Any prejudice and statements that are prejudice and sensational needs to be stopped.

“Let the Malay saying ‘Like taking flour out of the hair, let the flour not scatter and the hair not break’ become the basis of actions,” he added.
