MBPJ Requires for Commercial Buildings to Provide 10% of Parking Lots for Women

PETALING JAYA, 12 May: The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) now requires for all commercial buildings in areas under its jurisdiction to provide special parking lots for women.

The Deputy Mayor of Petaling Jaya, Puasa Md Taib, said that 10 percent of the total parking lots, either outside or inside the building, should have this facility.

He said that parking lots for women should be provided, whether in new buildings or old buildings.

“For new buildings, we have imposed this requirement to the developer or building owner during the Certificate of Completion and Compliance (CCC) process. If they refuse, the CCC will not be issued.

“For existing buildings, we will enforce this requirement when they want to renew their licences,” he said during a press conference at the Petaling Jaya Car-Free Day programme yesterday.

Puasa said that the facility should include setting up closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras and security guards to ensure that the safety of women is guaranteed.

Previously, as a start, MBPJ provided two parking lots in front of Public Bank and AmBank.

The facility, located at the City Centre in Section 52, was provided in strategic areas equipped with security guards and CCTV cameras.

In addition, Puasa also informed that the 6 kilometre (km) bicycle and pedestrian path around the City Centre in Section 52 will be built under the ‘PJ City Cycleways Network’ and the main road will be turned into a one-way street starting June.

The project is part of the sustainable transport programme involving a 56 km bicycle path for the entire area of Petaling Jaya, where 13 km has been completed and 16 km more is expected to be completed this year.
