SHAH ALAM, AUG 2: “There is no zoning of land to date, on Lot 4827 and 3974, owned by Paya Indah Wetlands,” said Tourism, Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs Exco Elizabeth Wong.
She said that the 450.76 acre land had been gazetted by the Central Wildlife and National Parks Department as a Marshland Reserve under the National Land Code since 1998.
She said that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) had been signed on August 1, 2007, between the State and Federal Government on matters relating to Paya Indah Wetlands’ conservation management and administration.
“Since the MoU was signed, there has been no application to change the use of land for Lot 4827 and Lot 3974.
“Other than the two lots, which are owned by Paya Indah Wetlands, other lots are privately owned,” she said in a media conference at the Selangor State Assembly Lobby on August 2.
Elizabeth said, Paya Indah Wetlands is also not listed in the Ramsyar Convention.
“The State Government is very concerned with Paya Indah Wetlands’ status due to its strong eco-tourism attraction,” she said.
Upon checking www.ramsar.org, SelangorKini found that six areas are listed in the Ramsar Convention but none of them are in Selangor.
The six areas are Tasek Bera in Pahang, Tanjung Piai, Pulau Kukup and Sungai Pulai in Johor, Kuching Wetland in Sarawak, and Lower Kinabatangan-Segama Wetland in Sabah.
