SHAH ALAM, 21 Nov: The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) will tighten the monitoring of performance of 144 contractors for waste management and public cleaning in the city for a short period until the end of 2014.
The Mayor of Petaling Jaya, Datin Paduka Alinah Ahmad, said that the move is being taken by prioritising compliance with the prescribed waste collection scheduled at all premises in the city.
“Focus is also given to regulation and enforcement at illegal waste dumps, clearing, storm drains and also protocol roads.
“In October, MBPJ approved an Integrated Solid Waste Management Guide and Policy,” she said during a speech at the full MBPJ meeting today.
Alinah said that the guide takes into account the need to prevent waste generation at all levels of planning, construction, population, licencing and operation, as well as efficient waste management operations.
She said that the Chief Minister has posed a great challenge to the local authority to resolve the garbage collection issue, whether domestic waste, solid waste and bulk waste, in each local authorities’ area until the end of this year.
She said that this includes the maintenance of damaged roads to ensure the comfort and safety of road users and MBPJ will provide an allocation of RM5 million for patching potholes.
“MBPJ has established six road patrol groups (Road Gang) under the Engineering Department which monitors and acts upon the patching of all road damages in Petaling Jaya. It will be performed every day according to zone.
“The task force is required to report on the corrective action taken and the work must be performed with good quality,” she said.
At the same time, she said that MBPJ will warn all utility companies involved in road excavation, resurfacing roads that have been dug up, to be carried out and finished with good quality work.
“MBPJ will not compromise with low quality of work,” she said.
