State government readies platform to overcome underage pregnancies

SHAH ALAM, 13 Aug: The cases of teenage underage pregnancies is a phenomenon of modernisation and a cultural shock that is now seen happening among teenagers and youth.

The Exco for Health, Welfare, Women and Family Affairs, Dr Daroyah Alwi, said that among the main reason is that teenagers are often exposed to the use of gadgets that link to social networking sites.

“It is reported that pregnancies happen to teenage women aged between 10 to 19 years of age.

“In addition, they are also exposed to drug abuse and promiscuity, which is worrisome,” she told Selangor Kini.

Daroyah said that the state takes this issue seriously because they are the younger generation that should be educated for the country’s development in the future.

“Religious and moral education should be incorporated and emphasises in school subjects.

“In addition, parents should not leave the responsibility to teachers, but should monitor their children’s activities such as with whom they are friends with, where they are going and to reduce the use of gadgets,” she said.

Daroyah said that the state government is planning and developing a programme to educate teenagers, in addition to filling up their spare time with more beneficial things.

“They will be exposed to rational thought in every behaviour that may lead to problems and affect their future.

“Through the programme, we are making effort to curb social ills from becoming rampant,” she said.
