Exclude GST for small businesses

SHAH ALAM, 12 Sept: Goods and services tax (GST) exemptions should be made for small businesses because it burdens them.

The Klang MP, Charles Santiago, said that most businesses now face losses due to the dwindling number of customers due to rising prices.

“The government will not abolish the GST, but they can exempt them for small businesses selling food or medicine.

“The people should consistently raise objections because their voices are loud and will be heard by the government,” he told Selangor Kini.

He said that similar problems are also being faced by taxi drivers who have to pay more then one GST to run their businesses.

He said that it is more burdensome as they have to compete with the Uber service despite it not receiving approval by the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).

“They have to compete with other services, now, their income has also diminished by 30 percent when the GSt was imposed,” he said.

Prior to this, stall and grocery shop owners urged the government to abolish the GST in the Budget 2016 that will be tabled in Parliament on October 23.
