KLANG, July 22: The State Government will start distributing masks to the public tomorrow if the air pollution index (API) is high.

Exco for Health, Entrepreneur Development, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Daroyah Alwi said that the State Government as allocated a total of four thousand masks for each constituency.

“For this short time frame, we will distribute (the masks) tomorrow if the API is at an unhealthy level.

“The masks are excess from the first wave of haze last month. However, it is still sufficient at the moment. But it will be added based on current situations.

“If it is in urgent circumstances, we will directly distribute it to the public,” she told reporters after a visit to the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital.

As of this morning, Banting recorded an API of 105, while the API was at 80 for Port Klang.

According to the Meteorology Malaysia’s statement, the haze is expected to only carry on for a short period due to the changes in wind patterns.

API readings between 0 and 50 are categorised as good, 51 to 100 (medium), 101 to 200 (unhealthy), 201 to 300 (very unhealthy) and dangerous at 300 and above.

Last month, Malaysia experienced severe haze with some areas recording dangerous levels of air pollution causing schools to be closed temporarily.
