MPSJ aims to be a Biomass City by 2020

PUCHONG, 16 Oct: The Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) Integrated Biomass Centre is actively operating as a main support facility to the Solid Waste Reduction Programme.

The MPSJ Yang Dipertua, Datuk nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan, said that the main objective of this centre is to achieve its target in reducing solid waste by 22 percent by 2020.

He said that the intention is also to make MPSJ a Biomass City by 2020 and a vibrant municipality.

“The waste-to-wealth concept is where organic waste is processed to become compost. The examples of projects that use this concept is the Garden Waste Compost Project, the Food Waste Compost Project and the Vermicompost.

“Meanwhile, the concept of waste-to-energy is where organic waste is processed to obtain fuel such as methane gas that can be converted into electricity through the Anaerobic Digestion process,” he said.

Since being fully operational in 2013, the operations centre in Bandar Bukit Puchong managed to produce green products through the introduction of two waste-to-wealth and waste-to-energy concepts.

Selangor Kini understands that the centre is able to process 50.44 tonnes of organic waste through the waste-to-wealth concept involving 34.65 tonnes of garden waste and 7.22 tonnes of dry leaves, 8.57 tonnes of food waste throughout 2014.

The hard work by MPSJ for 2015 saw them becoming the only local authority that received the Green World Ambassador 2015 award.

The double success came after they won the Green Apple Environment Award 2014 through their green initiatives and the MPSJ Biomass initiative.
