Selangor has not decided to use incinerators

SHAH ALAM, 11 Sept: Selangor has not yet decided to use incinerators to replace landfills for waste disposal.

The Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, instead said that it would depend on discussions among all stakeholders to evaluate other options available.

“We need to hear the views of everyone and to be committed to ensure that the waste issue is handled wisely.

“So far, there is no decision (to use incinerators) because it depends on discussions and choices,” he said.

He said this after officiating the ‘Beyond 3R : A More Sustainable Solution For Selangor Waste Management’ seminar at the Shah Alam Convention Centre (SACC) yesterday.

Mohamed Azmin said that the state government is determined to make Selangor a clean state, in addition to having an effective solid waste management system.

He said that the biggest challenge today is to provide further education to the public to share the responsibilities in maintaining cleanliness.

“What’s more challenging is how to manage waste creators because it exists because people throw garbage.

“Laws alone cannot solve the problem, however people should be built through education and awareness that cleanliness is important and a shared responsibility,” he said.

Commenting on the seminar, he said that it is to trigger a paradigm shift in the quest for a holistic and sustainable solution for solid waste.

He said that civic consciousness should be planted in the soul of the people to ensure that organised waste management practices can be followed.

“If the element is successfully applies, the people have the motivation to manage and reduce the production of waste,” he said.
