Sg Kayu Ara cleaning to prevent flash floods

PETALING JAYA, 10 Aug: The cleaning of Sungai Kayu Ara would hopefully reduce the risk of flash floods in Kampung Cempaka.

The Damansara Utama Assemblyman, Yeo Bee Yin, said that the work under the supervision of the Selangor Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) received cooperation from the government linked company (GLC), Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd (KSSB).

He said that KSSB is performing dredging to a depth of five feet for 1 kilometre in Sungai Kayu Ara near Jalan PJU 1/4.

“With this partnership, we do not need to issue any provisions and it is being done for free.

“However, this is not a guarantee that there will no longer be flash floods. We only hope that it can accommodate a larger water capacity compared to previously, this avoiding flooding,” she said during a press conference at the Kapung Cempaka Community Hall.

Also present was the Petaling District DID Assistant Engineer, Jamaludin Sharif, and the Chairman of the Kampung Cempaka Village Security Development Committee (JKKK), Theresa Lim.

Meanwhile, Jamaludin explained that the work is a short-term solution while long-term solution is being implemented based on the allocation under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP).

“However, we are monitoring the cleaning that began two weeks ago until the end of this year.

“The work is not based on profit and is to help solve the problem of the people alone,” he said.
