JAIS establishes independent committee, ready to take action against officers who violate procedures

SHAH ALAM, 8 July: The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) has established an independent committee to investigate the controversial ‘khalwat’ (proximity) arrest of a woman and three men who were shifting houses recently.

JAIS Director, Ahmad Zaharin Mohd Saad, said that JAIS will not hesitate to take appropriate action against officers who violate procedures provided under the Selangor Syariah Criminal Procedure Enactment 2003.

“An independent committee has been established to investigate whether the officers involved in the case complied with investigation procedures when arresting suspects under Section 29 of the Syariah Criminal Enactment (Selangor) Year 1995.

“JAIS will issue an apology if it is proven that the officers did not perform their duties according to laws and regulations,” said Ahmad Zaharin in a press statement.

He explained that at the time, the case involving the suspects only exist based on suspicion.

“The outcome of the case depends on the results of the on-going investigation and the prosecution’s decision after reviewing the evidence,” added Ahmad Zaharin.

JAIS also hopes that all parties do not comment without referring to facts from JAIS for fear of polemical and negative perceptions against the suspects and JAIS.
