SHAH ALAM, 15 July: The whole of Pulau Ketam and Sungai Lima had their water supply cut again when the pipeline at the seabed that supplies treated to the area was damaged again.
The General Manager of the Syabas Department of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs, Pricilla Alfred, said that this was due to the seabed drilling by a third party on the evening of July 12.
“When tests were conducted by Syabas on the distribution of water supply to Pulau Ketam and Sungai Limau, there was a new damage at the same pipeline at a different location, again due to drilling at the seabed by a third party.
“In relation to that, the supply to users is not able to recover yet. At present, work to detect the leakage is being done by qualified divers appointed by SYABAS before the damage repair can be done,” she said in a statement today.
Since June 21, the whole of Pulau Ketam and Sungai Lima experienced an unscheduled water outage due to a burst pipe at the seabed on the 18 kilometre pipeline.
The re-connection of the pipeline was fully completed, with the last connection being done on July 11, but it was damaged again due to seabed drilling by a third party.
At least 1,184 consumer accounts, involving 5,921 consumers in the two areas, were cut off from receiving clean water when the 450mm High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe burst.
“SYABAS will report to the authorities, including the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) for action against the third party for the offence under Section 122 of the Water Services Industry Act 2006,” she said.
To minimise consumer inconvenience, SYABAS continues to distribute emergency bottled water by using specially chartered boats.
To date, 57,500 bottles of water have been distributed to the residents of Kampung Sungai Lima and Pulau Ketam through the Local Service Centres (PKS) activated in Pulau Ketam and Sungai Lima.
