Speaker: Flip-flopping on Hudud issue, Umno Assemblyman’s move wastes DNS time

SHAH ALAM, 13 June: The Selangor State Assembly (DNS) Speaker, Hannah Yeoh, said that every Assemblyman has the responsibility to preserve the integrity of the DNS and to not make it an arena for political games.

Hannah was commenting on the action by the Sungai Air Tawar Assemblyman (Umno), Kamarol Zaki Abdul Malik, who withdrew the notice to debate the issue of Hudud law, which is supposed to be debated during the assembly session, starting June 16.

She said that her office received the notice today after she announced yesterday that that the motion was received to be discussed during the assembly session.

“No reason was provided for his decision to withdraw the motion. A member may, by notice in writing to the Clerk, withdraw any notice of motion previously given by him, as per Standing Order 29 (1)

“Even though it is an assemblyperson’s right to table and to withdraw a motion, this practice is not to be encouraged,” Hannah said in a press statement today.

She said that this move by the assemblyman from UMNO as a blatant political stunt and that he should have wasted the assembly’s time by acting in such a manner.

“If an assemblyman is not ready or prepared to debate or stand by his motion, he should never have wasted the State Assembly’s time by tabling it in the first place.

“The State Assembly is the rightful place for assemblymen, elected to represent the people to speak up for their constituents and to participate honourably and productively in legislative processes.

Opposition leader, Datuk Mohd Shamsuddin Lias, said that the Selangor Barisan Nasional (BN) withdraws the motion to study if the Sharia Hudud law should be implemented in the state.

Shamsuddin said that the motion raised a lot of confusion after the Sungai Air Tawar Assemblyman handed it to Hannah.
