Salary Increase for Selangor Assembly Helps Eliminate Corruption

SHAH ALAM, 1 Dec: The Selangor Government’s move to increase the salary of administrators and assemblymen in the state would help eliminate corruption among elected representatives.

The Deputy President of PAS, Mohamad Sabu said, previously the people were confused with the salary increase issue by the media despite it being a necessity for representatives of the people.

“Representatives of the people need to be educated to be against corruption. Like what is happening in Singapore, where the allowances of Members of Parliament are so high that it even surpassed several European countries.

“However, the corruption index in Singapore, as revealed by Transparency International, is at 9.5/10, which indicated almost no corruption,” he said, quoted from The Malaysian Insider.

According to Mohamad, in Singapore, there are no leakages and wastage in expenditure because the taxpayers’ money is managed well.

“I found that most of Barisan Nasional (BN) representatives of the people do not care about allowances and so on because they have money from various other sources,” he said.

He said that the increase in salary and allowance in Selangor will not reduce much of the state reserves because if leakage is controlled, it will save a lot more of the taxpayers’ money.

“Assemblymen’s allowance, in particular, prior to being increased was only on par with that of principals, and sometimes, lower than principals at bigger schools,” he said.
