SEPANG, SEP 1: Sepang Municipal Council (MPSepang) strongly prohibits the use of plastic and polystyrene at its community carnival which will be held on September 3.

Deputy Yang Dipertua Muhammad Hafiz Shaari said the ban is in line with the State Government’s effort to stop the use of these two items by 2017.

“We will begin initial steps by campaigning to create awareness to the public including banning these items at all programmes that we initiate.

“Besides that, all council members have been informed to start taking measures to discourage businesses from using plastic bags and polystyrene,” he said after the MPSepang Full Meeting on August 29.

At the same time, he said biodegradable or recyclable packaging materials will be widely used in Selangor by 2017.

Therefore, local authorities must take responsibility to announce and publicise the matter to traders and consumers.

“The public is encouraged to start bringing their own shopping bags from now on in order to avoid using plastic bags.

“We are confident that this can help to reduce solid waste in Selangor,” he said.
